GUHROOHGAMESH!
18th-Mar-2009 04:47 pm
gotta be kidding
I don't know how many of you have seen the Sakura-Con 2009 commercial, but if you haven't then you owe it to yourself to watch it. And then ask yourself, do you know any real people who behave this way regarding Japanese culture? Or at least, anybody who has any genuine experience with it?

I remember a very old commercial on the Sci-Fi Channel that aired when they began showing uncut episodes of the classic Star Trek series. It depicted a man in his twenties, sitting in a chair, staring at the TV. His dog was lying beside a bowl with the name "Spock" painted across it. The Trek theme begins to play from the TV set, and you hear Captain Kirk's voice - and the man leans forward and drools. Camera zooms into his face and it goes into slow motion, so you can watch him drooling. In slow motion.

Why do people in marketing think that fans appreciate their being portrayed as braindead/insane/unlikeable people? Is this commercial supposed to make me want to go to Sakura-Con? Because it's only achieved the opposite effect. I just don't get it.

So I made my own version.

Sakura Con is one of the worst major anime cons in existence anyway so you're not missing much.

omg my sister acts like that towards anime, etc....its horrible haha.
18th-Mar-2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
Honestly, this'd probably be better advertising for the convention than the ACTUAL commercial.

I agree. Seems more accurate.

God, thank makes me sad to be in the anime fandom.

But you version makes me happy to be in the fandom!

Very well done

You're a furry. That makes you lower than weeaboos automatically.

/sarcasm
/ironic use of icon
18th-Mar-2009 05:05 pm (UTC)
This needed to be done. I applaud you sir.
18th-Mar-2009 05:07 pm (UTC)
Great Ra, that was awesome! And all the fandoms seem appropriate to the characters. You even got Bandit Keith's "...in America!" in there! Very nice! ^_^
/so who's shorter, Ed or Yugi?
18th-Mar-2009 05:21 pm (UTC)
In America will be awesome now and forever.
And Yugi's definitely shorter than Ed, but Yugi doesn't care about it as much as Ed does. XD
18th-Mar-2009 05:07 pm (UTC) - WIN!

and your version=win!!!

WHAT does Gilgamesh have to do with anything?
18th-Mar-2009 05:21 pm (UTC)
It's "Guhroogomesh"

And, actually, there is an anime called Gilgamesh, so there's that.
18th-Mar-2009 05:16 pm (UTC)
I don't know anyone who acts like that, but I know people who act much, much worse. Creepy moe-obsessed weeaboos.
18th-Mar-2009 05:21 pm (UTC)
Ohhhh you just made my morning.

(That sushi chef is not even Japanesem, wtf.)
18th-Mar-2009 05:26 pm (UTC)
Hey, what is Mai saying? I've listened a few times and I can't understand it...

BTW, I love the clip you use for Kaiba. He looks awesome there.

Smile D.K

They do a few songs on DDR.

GIRUGAMESH
18th-Mar-2009 05:32 pm (UTC)
At the sushi bars in town I'm not even served by Japanese.

They're all Mexican.

That was the worst overload of Otaku ever.
18th-Mar-2009 11:24 pm (UTC)
Those weren't even realistic otaku. Real otaku can't afford to eat at sushi restaurants, because we are too busy spending all of our money on cosplay and...well, okay, in my case I can't even buy anime or manga because I spend all my money on cosplay. T_T
18th-Mar-2009 05:51 pm (UTC)
that advert made me laugh my ass off, i think the Girugamesh! is a reference to the Jrock band Girugamesh, hence why the guy is dressed kinda "goth" or whatever. Bravo LK on creating one that made me laugh so much harder. And yes, people like those in the advert exist -_-
18th-Mar-2009 06:00 pm (UTC)
The part that scares me the most is that the people who did that ad are probably fans and WANTED to be in that ad. They might be staff or volunteers who are getting free stuff for doing it, but I bet they're real fans okay with being portrayed like that.
18th-Mar-2009 06:04 pm (UTC)
...so in an hour I'm going to be heading to class, where we'll be talking about the Epic of Gilgamesh. And I'll be trying to keep a straight face. but your commercial is definitely worth it

If I hear anyone else in the classroom snickering, I'll know who my fellow YGO Abridged fans are.
18th-Mar-2009 06:09 pm (UTC)
Not bad.

This parody is also pretty good, though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1z4jh9MdGU
18th-Mar-2009 06:36 pm (UTC) - Who would respond positively to such an advert?

Shall I answer such a question?

Anyway, I can safely say that after viewing your parody video I'm pretty sure watching the original would be too painful to bear.

I hear the unfortunate people Mignogna cast for that commercial actually volenteered to do it! Those kids don't even get paid for humiliating themselves.
18th-Mar-2009 06:50 pm (UTC)
what the crap is Guhroohgamesh?
18th-Mar-2009 06:56 pm (UTC)
Unfortunately, I do know people like that. The kind of people who if you say hi would go off on a tangent about how someone says hi in their favorite anime or manga and you wonder if they have a death wish.
18th-Mar-2009 08:43 pm (UTC)
Such people give all of us a bad name... *sighs*
